Our Story

For over forty years, our home has been a haven for leaders seeking community and support. At Recentered, our vision is to offer every Christian leader and their spouse a space for restoration, renewal, and practical guidance. Step into a safe and nurturing environment where you can experience transformation and grace.

Ed and Judy fell in love during the Jesus Movement and have been married for 54 years. They have three married children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. For five decades, they've poured their hearts into ministry, serving in churches, conferences, and mentoring leaders around the world.

Before their time in ministry, Ed and Judy lived in the Sierra Nevada mountains, where Ed served as a crew boss on a wildlife fire crew, the Fulton Hotshots. After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara, Ed and Judy moved to Germany, where Ed was an Army officer and they were actively involved in small-group ministry. These experiences shaped their lives and their approach to leadership.

After their time in Germany, they moved to Dallas, where Ed pursued theological studies, deeply influenced by Dr. Howard Hendricks' emphasis on practical Bible teaching.

Ed served as a lead pastor in two churches, always with Judy by his side. While their first church experience in the Midwest taught them valuable lessons in cultural understanding, their second church plant in the beautiful Oregon Cascades became a deeply personal journey. Although the church initially thrived, the pain of strained leadership relationships ultimately led to the loss of their church, community, home, and dreams.

Their passion for healthy church leadership relationships and teams was born from this trauma.

They eventually settled in Southern California, where Ed led the historic Church of the Open Door for 21 years. During this time, they learned to foster unity and discipleship, drawing from their experiences and insights from Trueface Ministries.

After serving 21 years at Church of the Open Door, Ed and Judy launched Recentered Group with a desire to provide the support and understanding they once longed for. Their heart is to be a safe haven for pastors, a place where they can find love, guidance, and a listening ear.

But we proved to be gentle among you. As a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children, in the same way, we had a fond affection for you and were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us.

Accomodations

Two upstairs bedrooms are appointed to provide a warm and cozy place with a private bath for couples to process the conversations and consider the follow-up that would help them best. Our backyard invites guests to spaces with a view of the San Gabriel mountains and the stunningly beautiful Southern California sunsets, the healing warmth of a hot tub, or the shimmering flames of the fire table on a star-lit night. Couples from colder climates, especially those in the Northeast, especially enjoy our temperate SoCal seasons to escape the snow and ice back home.

Whether it's burnout, woundedness, tensions in marriage or family, feeling stuck, or simply needing an encouraging break, our three-to-five-day retreats are custom-designed to meet your needs.

Beyond the peaceful haven of our home, Southern California offers a wealth of enriching experiences. Consider extending your stay nearby to explore the iconic landmarks. You could catch a show at the Hollywood Bowl, experience the joy of Universal Studios, or embrace your inner child at Disneyland. While we focus on your personal retreat, you may want to take advantage of these experiences on your own before or after our retreat.

Nearby hiking trails into the San Gabriel mountains, a trip to the beach to see the Pacific and enjoy the SoCal lifestyle, or even a redemptive play in downtown Hollywood at Hollywood First Presbyterian church. We try to pace the retreat to the unique needs of every couple – whether they want intensive guidance with some much needed breaks, or to simply get away from the grind of ministry and receive unconditional and protective love.

Take the next step toward renewing, restoring, or strengthening your relationships and ministry as you experience the healing hospitality of Ed and Judy in their home.
